First-time buyer worksheet · Source review September 16, 2026
Equipment positions should not be frozen until the food trailer has a weight budget. Record the manufacturer's GVWR and every GAWR from the actual certification label. Weigh the trailer at named build stages. Estimate every later addition, then verify the completed and operating configuration on suitable scales. GVWR - measured weight can show a planning remainder, but it does not prove that every axle, tire, wheel, coupler, hitch or tow-vehicle limit is satisfied.
This is a project-planning guide, not a rating calculation or towing authorization. The manufacturer, component records, qualified builder, scale operator, tow-vehicle documentation and applicable law control the actual unit.
Planning a first trailer? Use this worksheet after the beginner food-trailer startup guide has identified the menu, operating city, site type and build path. Those decisions determine which equipment, tanks and operating loads belong in the weight budget.
01Put five different numbers on the worksheet
The word "capacity" causes trouble when the buyer, builder and towing team attach different numbers to it. Give each number its own row.
| Term | What it means here | Where it comes from | Common mistake |
|---|---|---|---|
| Measured weight | A scale reading for the trailer in a named configuration, place and time | Dated scale record with the weighing method and build/load condition | Treating a rolling-shell reading as the finished or road-ready weight |
| GVWR | The loaded weight of a single vehicle specified by its manufacturer | Certification label and matching unit records | Calling GVWR the trailer's current weight or adding it to the tow vehicle's GVWR |
| GAWR | The load-carrying capacity specified by the vehicle manufacturer for one axle system, measured at the tire-ground interfaces | Certification label for each axle system | Treating the axle supplier's nominal component rating as the completed vehicle's GAWR |
| Payload budget | A project estimate for weight that can still be added within the identified build stage and unit rating | Controlled worksheet using current measured weight and known additions | Presenting the arithmetic remainder as a guaranteed legal or usable payload |
| Axle load | The weight actually carried at the tire-ground interfaces by an axle or axle group during the weighing | Individual platform or axle-group scale reading | Assuming total trailer weight proves that each axle is within GAWR |
Tongue load needs another line. It is the portion transferred through the coupler or hitch to the tow vehicle. That share belongs to the trailer's total loaded condition, yet a ticket that records only the trailer axles may leave it out. Write down how each number was obtained.
02Record the build stage with every scale ticket
A bare weight tells the next builder very little. Use a stage name and list what was physically present.
| Stage | Record with the measured value |
|---|---|
| U.S. rolling shell | VIN, date, shell condition, running gear, spare or loose items, fluids, scale location and weighing method |
| Final build before customer load | Installed equipment, batteries/generator, tanks, plumbing, fuel systems, accessories, graphics and remaining open work |
| Road-ready operating load | Intended water and wastewater condition, fuel/LP, ingredients, packaging, smallwares, tools, cleaning supplies and secured loose inventory |
Keep photographs and the current equipment schedule with the ticket. A refrigerator swap, added battery bank or relocated water tank does not rewrite the earlier measurement. It creates a new condition to record.
03Use the subtraction as a warning light, not an approval
For early planning, use this line:
planning remainder = unit GVWR - measured trailer weight at the stated stage
Subtract every planned addition. Keep an allowance marked as an estimate until the installed item is weighed. The running total exposes a project that is already using too much of its weight budget.
The calculation does not set the legal rating or establish safe distribution. A trailer can remain below GVWR while an axle exceeds its GAWR. Tire, rim, coupler, hitch, tow vehicle and other rated components add constraints of their own. Center of gravity and side-to-side placement matter even when the total fits the worksheet.
04List the loads that design meetings tend to miss
- cooking, refrigeration, warewashing and beverage equipment;
- counters, floors, partitions, shelving and equipment supports;
- electrical panels, conductors, shore-power hardware, batteries, inverter and generator;
- fresh-water and wastewater tanks at the operating quantities being evaluated;
- water heater, pumps, sinks, filters, piping and stored hoses;
- hood, exhaust, make-up air, HVAC, LP/fuel and suppression components where applicable;
- awnings, steps, signage, lighting, spare parts and exterior accessories;
- ingredients, ice, beverages, packaging, smallwares, tools and cleaning stock;
- owner-supplied items that never appeared on the builder's equipment schedule.
Each line also needs a location or zone. A rear equipment cluster, a curb-side tank bank and a tongue-mounted power package affect axle, side and hitch loading differently.
Read the equipment and utilities brief before the layout is approved. If independent power is part of the plan, build the load list with the power plan before generator guide, then add the actual component weights and mounting positions.
05Compare ratings and readings in the right pairs
| Question | Correct comparison |
|---|---|
| Is the complete trailer within its manufacturer rating? | Total measured loaded trailer weight versus GVWR, using a weighing method that captures the complete trailer weight |
| Is an axle system within its rating? | Actual load on that axle system versus its GAWR |
| Do the fitted tires support the axle rating? | Tire size, count, inflation specification and load ratings versus the GAWR requirements applicable to the unit |
| Is the tow vehicle within its limits? | Tow-vehicle, hitch and combination measurements versus the specific vehicle and hitch ratings and instructions |
| Is the tongue load known? | Loaded configuration measured with an appropriate method, then checked against the trailer, coupler/hitch and tow-vehicle instructions |
The sum of the GAWR values does not have to equal GVWR. Some loaded trailer weight can be carried through the tongue by the towing vehicle. The unit's manufacturer establishes the ratings, and the loaded arrangement still has to keep actual axle loads within them.
06The current MOBITRUCK rolling-shell checkpoint
MOBITRUCK designs and prepares the shell components at the production facility in Estonia. Under the workflow reported by the owner, Concession Nation, Inc. assembles the rolling shell and is expected to complete the VIN, certification-label, Dexter axle-model and weighing records after assembly. The exact manufacturer and issuer identities remain pending verification against a current MOBITRUCK unit label and MCO or title package; those unit documents control.
That ticket gives the next builder a controlled starting point. It is neither the final empty build weight nor the road-ready operating weight. The record should name the VIN, date, build stage, loading condition and weighing method. The physical label and actual unit records control GVWR, GAWR and equipment identity.
The promised Concession Nation scale, axle and certification examples remain document-pending in the editorial evidence library. Until sanitized samples arrive, this page does not publish sample figures or imply that one Dexter axle model, GVWR or payload applies across the MOBITRUCK range.
When another qualified builder completes the trailer, its contract should assign the later weight ledger, placement review and final weighing. Connect that handoff to the U.S. builder receiving guide and the food trailer scope of work. The separate document-package guide shows where the scale ticket sits in the unit file.
Rolling shell names the commercial handoff, not a federal vehicle stage. The unit records must say whether that handoff is a completed vehicle or an incomplete vehicle moving to a final-stage manufacturer. Later work on a certified vehicle before its first retail sale may also carry alterer duties. The applicable Part 567/568 path controls who carries ratings and certification information forward.
07A practical weight-control routine
- Copy GVWR and each GAWR from the actual label into the controlled worksheet.
- Record the rolling-shell measurement and weighing method.
- Add vendor or measured weight for every approved component and owner-supplied item.
- Assign each addition to a longitudinal and side-to-side zone.
- Review estimated total, axle distribution, tongue load and tow-vehicle limits with qualified parties before installation.
- Reconcile substitutions and field changes as they occur.
- Weigh the completed trailer in the configuration named on the ticket.
- Load the intended operating quantities, secure the load and verify total, axle and tongue values again.
- Store the tickets with the VIN-specific closeout file and repeat the check after material changes.
Replace estimates with scale readings as the build advances. Keep both in the history. The variance improves allowances on the next unit.

FAQQuestions buyers and builders usually ask
Is payload always GVWR minus empty weight?
That subtraction is a useful planning remainder when the rating and measured condition belong to the same unit. Usable load is also constrained by actual axle loading, tire/rim fit, hitch and tow-vehicle limits, placement, later changes and the manufacturer's instructions. Ask the responsible manufacturer or builder to define any published payload figure.
Can I use the axle catalog capacity as GAWR?
No. GAWR is the value specified by the vehicle manufacturer for the axle system at the tire-ground interfaces. The axle beam model is important input, but the unit's label and complete axle system control the stated GAWR.
Why can axle load be lower than total trailer weight?
The hitch carries part of the loaded trailer through the tongue. A scale ticket that measures only the trailer axle platforms omits that transferred share. Use a weighing procedure that identifies total trailer weight, axle load and tongue load separately.
When should a food trailer be reweighed?
Use the contracted milestones and reweigh after changes that could materially alter total weight or distribution. Final equipment, batteries, generator, tank contents, inventory and later modifications can make a rolling-shell ticket obsolete for operating decisions.
Does a weight ticket replace the certification label?
No. The ticket records a measured condition. The label carries manufacturer-assigned GVWR and GAWR plus other required certification information.
